English overview
Entry Requirements for Chinese Applicants
- Usual threshold for taught master's (2:1 equivalent): an overall mark of 85% from a Chinese "highly regarded institution", while all other institutions are normally required to score at least 90%.
- First-class equivalent threshold: 88% from highly regarded institutions and 93% from all other institutions.
- Law taught master's programmes have a separate threshold: a four-year bachelor's degree in law, with 86% from institutions well regarded for Law and 90% from other institutions.
- The minimum scores are only a general rule: many programmes have specific requirements for degree results and subject background, and quantitative programmes often require a GRE or GMAT score.
- Competition is intense: meeting the minimum requirements does not guarantee an offer, standard requirements are only a guide, and different (higher) grades may be asked for.
- Chinese students at LSE in 2025: 816 undergraduates and 1314 graduate students.
- Undergraduate: the Chinese senior high school diploma is not accepted as an entry qualification; students can apply with the help of the Ambright Education Group via CEIS (GaoKao plus AST tests, with A=210, A*=250, and 250 in Mathematics needed for A*).
To be considered for admission to a taught master's programme (upper second class equivalent), we'd normally require a bachelor's degree with an overall mark of 85 per cent from applicants who have attended a highly regarded institution in China, while all other applicants are normally required to obtain a mark of at least 90 per cent. — https://www.lse.ac.uk/study-at-lse/international-students/china

International Tuition Fees
- LSE does not publish a single fee figure on its overview pages: tuition fees are listed by programme on the course pages and in the Table of Fees (the school-wide fee table), and are also stated in the offer letter; fees are set each spring.
- Fees are paid for each academic year of registration and normally increase each year; part-time graduate students pay half the full-time fee for each year of study.
- Official rough estimate of living costs: allow at least £1,550 per month (covering accommodation, travel, food, laundry, study costs and personal expenses).
- LSE graduates returning for a taught master's are eligible for a 10% fee reduction (some programmes, such as executive programmes, are excluded).

Visa, CAS and ATAS
- The living-cost evidence for Student visa applications is going up: from 30 November 2026 it is calculated at £1,570 per month for up to nine months (£14,130 in total).
- A CAS is a prerequisite for the Student visa application: an electronic document sent by email, and one CAS can only be used for one application; CAS numbers are limited, and each CAS issued costs LSE £55.
- A pre-CAS is sent for checking (name, passport number, etc.) before the CAS is issued, and any errors should be reported as early as possible; applications from overseas can be made up to six months before the course start date (three months from within the UK).
- Standard processing is advertised as three weeks but do not rely on it: LSE advises applying as soon as possible once the CAS arrives, to avoid the Summer Surge peak starting in late June; funds must be kept in the account throughout the application, and some students are invited to a credibility interview.
- You must not enter the UK as a tourist (Visitor) and then submit a Student visa application; LSE also does not sponsor part-time Student visas.
- Graduate Route: undergraduate and master's graduates receive a two-year visa (reduced to 18 months for applications made on or after 1 January 2027), and PhD graduates three years; no employer sponsorship or financial requirement applies, and the degree itself is treated as meeting the English language requirement.
- ATAS: appears on the visa page only as a general UKVI guidance link (Appendix ATAS); the page does not state which LSE courses require ATAS.
From 30 November 2026, the monthly living cost required to be evidenced for a Student visa application will increase to £1,570 per month up to a maximum of nine months (£14,130). — https://info.lse.ac.uk/current-students/immigration-advice/applying-for-a-Student-visa
To be able to apply for a Student visa for LSE you will need a CAS number. It is an electronic document that will be sent to you by email. — https://info.lse.ac.uk/current-students/immigration-advice/applying-for-a-Student-visa
CAS numbers are issued to the School by the Home Office and we have to apply for our CAS allocation each year. We are given a set number, so they are not infiinite and there is also a cost of £55 for each CAS that we issue. — https://info.lse.ac.uk/current-students/immigration-advice/applying-for-a-Student-visa
Offer holders should receive a pre-CAS from the relevant admissions team to check before the CAS is issued. — https://info.lse.ac.uk/current-students/immigration-advice/applying-for-a-Student-visa
You can apply up to six months in advance of your sponsorship start date outside the UK and up to three months in advance in the UK if you are able to be issued with a CAS — https://info.lse.ac.uk/current-students/immigration-advice/applying-for-a-Student-visa
Last year, we saw delays in visas being issued even for low-risk nationals, so whilst the standard processing time is advertised as three weeks, you should not be relying on this and should plan to apply as soon as possible upon recieving your CAS. — https://info.lse.ac.uk/current-students/immigration-advice/applying-for-a-Student-visa
The UKVI can request, when considering your application, additional evidence that the funds in your bank account are available to you throughout the application. You should therefore keep the funds in place. — https://info.lse.ac.uk/current-students/immigration-advice/applying-for-a-Student-visa

Other Things to Note
- Most taught master's programmes have no fixed deadline: admissions are rolling and a programme closes once all available places are filled, so applying early is strongly recommended (it also helps with scholarship and visa timing).
- Applications take an average of about 8 weeks to decide (taught master's); the main intake is the autumn term (late September), and some programmes in Economics, Accounting, Finance and Management require Summer School or introductory courses in the July-September months before the main programme begins.
- Scholarships: LSE offers generous scholarships to graduate students each year, alongside funding from external organisations, research councils and governments around the world; there are also taught master's scholarships for students from specific countries/regions.
- Employment data: median salaries for taught graduate students 15 months after graduating range from £30,000 to £65,000 (depending on the subject studied).
There is intense competition for admission; early applications have a greater chance of being successful and of meeting financial support/scholarship and visa deadlines. — https://www.lse.ac.uk/study-at-lse/Graduate/Prospective-students/How-to-Apply/When-to-apply
Only a few programmes have deadlines by which you should apply – decisions are mostly made on a rolling basis, which means that a programme will close once all of the available places have been filled. — https://www.lse.ac.uk/study-at-lse/Graduate/Prospective-students/How-to-Apply/When-to-apply
